CVE-2013-2596: Linux Kernel Integer Overflow Vulnerability

High severity, CVSS 7.8. Actively exploited: in CISA KEV since 2022-09-15. EPSS: 3.2% chance of exploitation in the next 30 days.

Integer overflow in the fb_mmap function in drivers/video/fbmem.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.9, as used in a certain Motorola build of Android 4.1.2 and other products, allows local users to create a read-write memory mapping for the entirety of kernel memory, and consequently gain privileges, via crafted /dev/graphics/fb0 mmap2 system calls, as demonstrated by the Motochopper pwn program.

Affected products

  • Linux Linux Kernel: from 2.6.12, before 3.0.75 (fixed in 3.0.75); from 3.1, before 3.2.45 (fixed in 3.2.45); from 3.3, before 3.4.42 (fixed in 3.4.42); from 3.5, before 3.8.9 (fixed in 3.8.9)
  • Motorola Android: version 4.1.2 only
